Historical Photos
The images in this section are mostly reproduced from postcard views dating from between 1905 to 1930. Much of the present Bawtry Hall was built following the sale in 1779 of Bawtry Manor to prominent West Yorkshire politician Pemberton Milnes of Wakefield. Following Milnes’ death in 1795, his daughter Bridget inherited the Bawtry estate. When she died in 1835, the Hall’s principal residents during the remainder of the century included Robert Pemberton Milnes, nephew of Pemberton Milnes and MP for Pontefract.
The most noted occupant during the present century, and indeed the last private owner of Bawtry Hall was Major George Herbert Peake, who purchased the property in 1904 from the Earl of Crewe. He added a wing to the Hall at the rear around 1905, incorporating the water tower. Major and Mrs Peake vacated the Hall at the outbreak of the Second World War. The Hall was the occupied by the RAF until the 1980’s.
