Why do we exist and how do we operate?
Bawtry Hall is owned and managed by Action Partners Corporation (Company No. 00094558 Charity No. 225364), formerly Sudan United Mission Corporation (Incorporated in 1907).
Our History
The Sudan United Mission Corporation (SUM) was founded by Dr Karl Kumm in 1904. Dr Kumm was a young German doctor with a real passion to tell people about the message of Jesus Christ. Initially with just three English pioneers, Dr. Ambrose H. Bateman, Mr. John G. Burt and Rev. John Lowry Maxwell, Dr Kumm set sail for Nigeria to establish a church and provide education and medical work. The SUM began a series of survey trips through the vast regions of North Central Africa, the primary goal was to establish a chain of churches across the continent. In spite of intense hardship and sometimes persecution, the Christian faith spread in remarkable ways and the Church of Christ In Nigeria (COCIN) was brought into being.
In 1988 Action Partners (SUM) began to look for a new headquarters and training base for its’ multi-cultural teams. The purchase of Bawtry Hall, a 100 room mansion house which had been empty for 4 years was a huge step of faith. Today the work of Action Partners continues to grow and flourish through the development of strategic relationships that support the growth of Bawtry Hall.
Our Aims and Values
Action Partners Corporation exists to advance the Christian faith by:
- Developing the church’s role in mission both at home and overseas
- Providing education and training facilities
- Providing hospitality and conference facilities
The vision of Action Partners Corporation is to see Bawtry Hall operate as a significant Kingdom facility that powerfully connects both local and global mission.
Specifically, Action Partners Corporation seeks to:
- Advance the Christian faith through local and global mission, helping people develop a meaningful and authentic Christian faith in every sphere of their lives
- Develop partnerships with individuals, groups and organisations, by working in communities, in business, in education, as well as through denominations, Christian networks and churches
- Develop the provision of innovative business and community facilities for training, conferences, seminars and other methods by offering a genuine hospitality for groups seeking a venue for their events and individuals needing space for retreats or time for study and reflection
Our Location
Bawtry Hall is located to the south of Doncaster. This area is strategically placed in the United Kingdom. With local international airports (Doncaster, Leeds / Bradford, Humberside), four ports (Goole, Hull, Immingham, Grimsby) and a main line station (Edinburgh to London), Doncaster is central to networking with other parts of the UK and Europe. Travel time to London from Doncaster by train is only 1 hour 30 minutes.
Yorkshire and Humber is a diverse region with great assets and huge potential. There are excellent environmental assets and good a communications infrastructure in place. The region also has strong cultural and educational facilities.
Bawtry Hall was built on the site of the manor house in 1778. The Georgian Hall with its beautiful grounds quickly became the focus for 18th Century Bawtry society. Today, having undergone renovation and modernisation, the Hall offers businesses a range of conference and training facilities. Set in seven acres of landscaped gardens with a lake, the Hall combines the charm of a spacious Georgian house and gardens, with warm homely facilities.
How are we governed and managed?
Action Partners Corporation is managed by a board of voluntary trustees and directors and a Senior Management Team. The Corporation also benefits from a Business Development Team of volunteers, who advise on, and deal with, day-to-day issues.
The Business Development Team contains a breadth of skills including the areas of business management, financial planning, marketing, information technology, training, and community regeneration. The Business Development Team is made up of both local and regionally based individuals.
What can you expect from us?
Action Partners Corporation seeks to work with all sections of the community. We work in partnership with individuals, groups and organisations. Everyone involved with Action Partners Corporation works together through shared relationships, shared values and a shared vision. We all find a value in our relationships with each other and this helps each of us to do what we do individually more effectively.
The Christian message is central to the purpose of Action Partners Corporation. Although we will never impose or force this message on those who work and partner with us, you can expect that it will be a core part of how we manage and operate our organisation. For our organisation the Christian message is an imperative and an unavoidable part of everything we do.
What do we expect from partners?
We acknowledge the freedom of people of all faiths or none, both to hold and to express their beliefs and convictions respectfully and freely. However, when working with us, we expect all partners to carry out their work in a manner which authenticates the Christian faith in accordance with the aims and values of Action Partners Corporation. In both word and action we expect that the conduct and activities of partners do not conflict in any way with our core values.
